The silky, athletic Labrador is so photogenic, it is an ideal dog to use as a subject for portrait photography. Have you ever wished you could take professional quality portrait style pictures of your Labrador? You don’t need to go out and buy expensive camera equipment to take great pictures of your dog. Scientific advances, and lower prices, make it possible for you to take great photos of your Labrador with an inexpensive digital camera or even a digital camera cell phone.

Taking pictures of your Labrador can be a lot of fun for you and your dog. The beautiful Labrador breed, with its soft, silky coat, is a natural subject for portrait photography. Your dog can look adorable in its pictures, whether you use the very latest in high-tech digital cameras or an inexpensive camera phone.

Using a digital camera can save you quite a bit of money over using an analog camera. With digital photography, you only pay for the pictures that you want to keep. Blurry shots, bad shots, red eyes and other rejected pictures all go straight into the digital trash can with a single click.

Choose a setting for your pictures. For an indoor setting, be sure the light is adequate. You may want to set your Labrador on a table with a lamp shining directly over it. Arrange any backdrops you will need so you can grab them quickly between shots. If you are working in an outdoor area, secure the area for your Labrador’s safety. A fenced back yard makes a great outdoor setting because you won’t need to worry about your dog getting away and being hit by a car or attacked by a loose dog.

When you’re trying to take great pictures of your Labrador, you can’t also be the one who does all the grooming, staging and other behind-the-scenes tasks. Ask a friend who gets along well with your dog to act as your assistant. After the photo session is over, give your helper a thank-you gift with one of the photos on it. A coffee mug or a framed print of one of your Labrador photos is a good idea for a gift.

You will have enough to do taking pictures - you can’t also stage your dog, groom your dog and pose your dog. Devote all your attention to taking great pictures. You’ll need at least one extra set of hands to manage your Labrador, fluff its hair, wipe its eyes, arrange the backdrops and do safety duty, especially if you are taking your Labrador pictures outside.

Toys and props add interest to your photos, and they keep your dog engaged during the photo session. Using props when photographing a puppy makes the pup look even younger and smaller.

Don’t take Labrador pictures while you are standing up. Get down to your dog’s eye level and then start taking your pictures. Both your candid shots and your portrait style shots will look better if the camera is at eye level with the dog. Follow these suggestions, and you will soon be taking professional quality pictures of your Labrador.
