Pros and Cons Of Using Online Travel Sites
August 18, 2008 on 3:41 am | In Travel |Personally, I have always enjoyed traveling outside of my country but I know many people that have never even left the state they live in and always vacation locally. Wherever it is you want to visit, there will be numerous sources of information online at special travel sites. Many people use the internet now to plan even complex travel plans, never seeing a travel agent. The predominance of websites dedicated to travel says just how popular this method is as every tour operator has their website as well to add to the mix.
This ease doesn’t always hold true however, and I have never been one to trust my entire vacation to a computerized travel site; it just seems a bit too strange to me. However, I am still of the old school and prefer to sit down with a cup of coffee and plan my vacation with a professional, face to face.
I find it difficult explaining what I am looking for to a machine whereas it is easier to ask for details from a travel agent. I have never found it easy dealing with travel sites especially when I want to have a discussion with someone before I make a decision on something; plus on the very rare occasion you manage to get through to a support line, they are not as helpful as someone sitting in front of you.
If you do speak to someone, they may just tell you what you want to hear which is easy and what are the chances you will be able to find them? With a travel agent they are real and I can always go back to them and clarify points especially if something goes wrong.
A best friend of mine only books her vacations on travel sites and often she’ll book a last minute vacation that a travel site is offering which is one huge advantage of using a travel site. By browsing online she has made some amazing savings by just waiting until the last possible minute to book the vacation.
I’m not one for last minute travel although I suppose I could be if my schedule was more flexible but my job requires me to ask for vacation months in advance. There are other discounts to be made as well if you are prepared to book your vacation through a travel site, like discounts on car hire, excursions and tickets for events for example.
Knowing a little about what you want and information about the location you want to travel too can be useful so I still research as much of this as I can online before I pay my travel agent a visit. It may not be fair on my travel agent but at least I know if something goes wrong, I will have someone to complain to on my return.
