Getting Credit After Bankruptcy

November 27, 2008 on 1:53 am | In Finance, Other | No Comments

You may think that filing bankruptcy will eliminate your ability to get credit, but in fact that is not the case. In the U.S. bankruptcy may legally be reported on your credit report for up to 10 years, but even during that time you can begin to reestablish your credit. “Credit” refers to you ability to borrow money, and lenders are primarily concerned with your ability to repay. The most important thing that lenders consider when determining your ability to repay is your debt to income ratio. Filing bankruptcy essentially eliminates your debts and therefore reduces your debt to income ratio. And ironically that improves your ability to borrow money in the future. In other words, filing bankrupcty makes you potentially more credit worthy. In some cases financial institutions actually solicit business from people who have filed bankrupcty because they know you are in a relatively good position to make good on your liabilities. That is because someone who has filed bankrupcty has a much more controlled financial situation and the debt to income ratio is reliable and more stable than when answering to many debtors. It is always best to consult with a reputable debt consulting or consumer bankruptcy firm for answers to questions about bankruptcy. There are also many sources of reliable information about bankrupcty online.
