Cat Training: Tips And Techniques

One critical fact to remember when cat training or kitten training, mainly when you’re house training them, is that scolding the cat simply does not work much of the time. Many owners, at first, when trying to litter box train their cat, get frustrated because they’re not able to catch the cat in an act of offense so that they can praise them.

Ordinarily, a person will attempt to convey the proof to the cat and exert authority over their pet when it occurs, perhaps even luring the cat to return to the box and making him paw through the litter. This is a facet of “cat training” that teaches your pet that his owner is his tormentor and the litter box is his punishment.

It is not only difficult but nearly impossible to catch the cat in the act, since cats have learned that being trapped is not desirable. It seems that your cat will only act naughty when you’re away, especially if you’ve caught it in the act before.

Cats do not keep track of time like we do, so if you’re punishing him for something he did an hour ago, he won’t make the connection. It’s been known that some cats will act up to get notice, which action leads to him continuing to be naughty.

If the new kitten has arrived from a very respectable breeder, the kitten will be given cat training in use of a litter box. In such cases, cat problems may be reduced. Kittens often learn from mother cats, and breeders will emphasize what kinds of things the mother cat has taught them.

Always ask the breeder for the type of litter box that your kitten was using prior to his coming to your house. Often if you alter to another brand, then he may not understand what it is for and may not use it. If you want to modify to another brand, then do it slowly.

A significant consideration while cat training or kitten training is realizing that scolding your pet isn’t always effective. An example is in litter box training. If the owner grabs the cat in “the act” and forces him into the litter box, the cat may learn to associate the litter box as an unpleasant experience. Your cat won’t correlate punishment after the fact and some will learn to misbehave simply to get attention. So, buy your kitten from a reputable breeder where cat problems are handled before you bring it home (and ask about the type of litter box and filler; and change it gradually if you must change it
