When your dog is barking, you might be dealing with more than one headache. On one hand, your dog is upset and on the other hand, your neighbors are probably ready to read you the riot act. If you have a dog that is barking excessively, you’ll find that you need to do something to quiet them, but you may be unsure as to what should be done. When you are looking to make sure that your dog stops barking so much, keep the following tips in mind.

1. Comfort

Make sure that your dog’s physical accommodations are comfortable. This is first and foremost what you need to look at, because one of the reasons that a dog will bark is because they are uncomfortable. Make sure that your dog has all the food and water that they need, and furthermore make sure that their waste is being picked up regularly. Similarly, if your is outside, make sure that they aren’t being teased or tormented and ensure that they have shelter in case of rain and shade during the summer months.

2. More Exercise

If you have a dog that barks excessively, they may just be bored, and barking is the only thing they can do. Some dogs are happy just lying around in the sun, but most have energy that needs to be let out. If you only take your dog for a walk during the day, consider taking them for two. When you have time take them to the park, or into the backyard for a little exercise. Some dogs need more mental stimuli than others and easily get bored. So work out their minds. Practice tricks that they already know. This helps when the barking is just out of boredom.

3. Don’t Scold Your Dog

Your dog may be begging for a little attention. They could just be lonely is all. Don’t yell, or scold your dog when they are barking. If they are barking because they are lonely then your yelling is just going to confuse, and hurt them. If they are barking because they are anxious you’ll find that your yelling is making the anxiety worse. Plus, if they are barking for attention they just got it. Whether it be positive or negative attention, all they know is they got attention. So go outside and wait until they calm down for a few second at least. Then, give them attention and love. This may help a great deal with anxiety barking, and barking from loneliness.

4. Check Their Territory

When you realize that your dog is barking a lot, find out if there is a solid reason behind it. See if anyone is teasing them to make them bark; you may need someone to keep an eye on them while you are at work for that reason. If your dog is barking only when the mailman comes up to your house or for a similar reason, you may simply want to move them to a place where they cannot see or hear the sounds of a supposed intruder.

Make sure that your dog stays quiet and is not a pest is an important part of being a dog owner so keep this in mind.
