You have to come to grips to accept the different traditions and cultures of the adopted child has, if they are different from yours. You have many things to considers such as holidays, names, food and clothings if you are going to preserve the baby’s heritage.

High Visual Intelligence Can Make Learning To read Difficult

June 23, 2008 on 4:07 am | In Home | No Comments
by David Morgan

Most teachers of 5 and 6-year-old children will tell you how baffled they can be by this phenomenon.

There are many children who struggle with reading, while being evidently bright and hard working.

Initially everything can seem OK. But, while other children’s reading progresses steadily, these children will hit a plateau at around 6. As the text they are expected to read gets more complicated, they will get more and more confused, often guessing wildly.

In the end their reading will go into reverse as their confidence implodes. They can feel the worry of their teacher and parents, but don’t know what to do.

Sometimes this leads to a diagnosis of dyslexia, which is quite wrong.

Dyslexia is a broad term that covers any fundamental problem with reading despite normal intelligence.

But trying to read the wrong way is not dyslexia. And that is what is happening.

Let me explain the process.

A very visual child will learn most of the alphabet quite easily. Then they are usually shown some simple high frequency words, which they can sight-memorise. Their first early reader books are usually made up of a very simple vocabulary of these common words and they can apparently read them, using this sight-memorisation and a bit of intelligent guessing.

So their parents and teacher believe all is well.

But this technique gets more and more difficult as the text gets more complex. Children with a good natural ear for the phonic structure in words will now switch to decoding the words instead.

The rest stay with their natural visual approach, unless carefully guided away from it. They just cannot hear the phonic structure of the words without the right help.

And these children are heading for failure

They will use the context to guess wildly, taking the first letter of the word as a guide.

They find themselves down a cul-de-sac and don’t know the way out. At the same time they can feel how worried their teacher and parents are, but can’t do any more than they already are.

One in five children reach the age of 11 unable to read properly and these children make up a large proportion of that group. It is a disaster for their academic career and working life.

And that is a tragedy for each of them because they are just trying to read the wrong way. We routinely see them successfully crack it in just a matter of weeks.

I hate children being labelled dyslexic because it reduces the sense of urgency to actually finding the solution. Acceptance creeps in, consigning the child to a much harder track through life.

Get the Facts About Credit Card Debt Consolidation

June 23, 2008 on 3:36 am | In Finance | No Comments
by John Brennan

There are often warnings in the newspapers about the high levels of credit card debt that many consumers have. You know how simple it is to let your credit cards get higher than you can manage - not having to pay immediately upon purchase often means the pain or struggle of having to pay for the item is delayed.

While these cards can be very convenient, they have been known to encourage both irresponsible spending habits and a decrease in financial discipline. Many argue that credit cards are more trouble than they are worth. Yet, millions of people around the world still use them. Many then make their situation worse by choosing to take out loans for debt relief when they owe too much and can’t make the payments on credit cards.

Credit cards debt occurs when a client of a credit card company buys something via their card. Because the client often thinks of the credit card as a bottomless pit of money, the client does not allow for wise planning and attention to budget that stems from using only cash to make purchases. Things get even worse for the customer when monthly bills aren’t paid on time. The level of debt increases at a rapid rate due to the interest and costly penalties often affiliated with late credit card payments. Credit card companies often charge a late fee every time a client fails to pay on time. This fee can vary, but it is usually anywhere from $15 to $30 per month.

Its no surprise that credit card companies make their profits from the high interest that they apply to outstanding balances and from late fees for missed payments. But at the same time they want to make sure their money is repaid and they are often relentless in tracking down outstanding monies owed to them. For many people, the only way out of this credit bind is to take out a credit card consolidation loan.

The problem with accruing a large credit card debt is not only the pressure that it puts on your finances and your life but it also impacts your credit rating. As soon as a cardholder defaults or misses a payment, credit agencies are informed. Having a poor credit score makes it more difficult to get loans and often increases the cost of any loan that you can get.

Continuing to default on a credit card debt can make your overall credit situation worse because other creditors may react to your declining credit score by increasing their interest rates to you. This can happen even if you’ve repaid any debts you have outstanding with them. This is called universal default, effectively making bad debt contagious. Learning how to utilize one’s credit responsibly is crucial to avoid the traps and pitfalls of credit card debt. A little budgeting helps avoid making the credit companies wealthier than they already are.

What do you really know about Guinea Pigs

June 23, 2008 on 3:28 am | In Home | No Comments
by John Savage

When was the last time you visited with a friend only to have their children frog march you out to the back yard to view their latest acquisition which you knew little about, their pet guinea pig?

They are adorable creatures that make excellent pets, but they have not always been a family pet, so what is their history and where were they first discovered?

Well, guinea pigs are technically known as Cavies, and they are a part of what we know of as the rodent family.

These delightful animals have been around for millions of years, and we know this because of fossilised remains that have been uncovered and it is only relatively recently that they have become a family pet.

They used to be much larger than they are today, and again, going back to those fossils, it has been found that they averaged 9 feet in lenght! Thats some guinea pig!

South America is the original homeland for the guinea pig, and in particular the Incas are the first recorded people to have them in their homes. They were treated as a religious icon but also I am afraid they were used for meals and that is still true today in some parts of South America.

Ever thought a rodent would be considered to have healing powers? Well in some parts of Peru they believe this and they think that the guinea pig can aid the transition from this life to the next. Now that is quite something!

It is believed that sailors were responsible for bringing guinea pigs to Europe and America, and during that time period they were sold for one guinea each - hence guinea pigs.

The other part of the name comes from what is in my opinion a vague likeness to the rear end of a pig, and also to the tendency to squeal like a pig.

One of their claims to fame is that they have been popular in the field of research and who I wonder has never heard the expression ‘being a guinea pig’?

Medical science has benefited greatly from the use of guinea pigs in their laboratories but of course although they have saved many a human life, the cost in the lives of the guinea pigs has been high.

Even today they are still used for research but in a more humane way which we are told does not cause any distress to the animal.

Today in Peru, guinea pigs still play a prominent role in various ceremonies, and quite often a person will give one as a present when they are trying to impress.

Guinea Pigs have come a long way over the years, and a recent poll showed that in the domestic animal popularity league they come fourth, just behind dogs, cats and rabbits.

Next time you look into a friends cage at their pet I think you will appreciate all the more what you are looking at.

The Wonderful World of Guinea Pigs

June 23, 2008 on 3:20 am | In Home | No Comments

Many a time when you visit with a friend or relative one of their children will drag you out to see their pet guinea pig, but have you ever stopped and asked yourself what you know about these delightful pets?

They are adorable creatures that make excellent pets, but they have not always been a family pet, so what is their history and where were they first discovered?

A cavy is the proper name for the guinea pig, and they are a member of the rodent family.

They have sprung into popularity within the past few decades and this might well make you think that they are a new pet, but think again. Archaeologists have uncovered fossilised remains dating back millions of years, making them a very old pet indeed!

Those same fossils indicate that the guinea pig used to be much larger than it is today, anything up to 9 feet long.

The first people to domesticate the guinea pig were the Incas, and South America is where they were first discovered. They were, and still are revered as both an Icon, and a source of food, in many South American countries.

In many parts of Peru they are thought very highly of because of their apparent ability to heal the sick and bring comfort and solace to the dying as they move into the next life.

The guinea pig first arrived in Europe and America as a result of sailors bringing them there to sell for one guinea, and this is how they got their name.

The second part of their name, pig, comes from their likeness, at the rear end, to pigs, and also to the fact that they tend to squeal a bit like pigs.

In the South American country of Peru guinea pigs are held in such esteem that they often are given as gifts to people, and they are involved in ceremonial occasions.

You may be surprised to learn that a rodent could be so well loved, but a recent survey placed guinea pigs just behind dogs, cats and rabbits in the popular pet league.

Next time you look into a friends cage at their pet I think you will appreciate all the more what you are looking at.
