Frequently Asked Mutual Fund Questions

May 8, 2008 on 7:07 am | In Finance | No Comments
by M. L. Williams

There are many frequent questions that are common about mutual funds. This is probably because mutual funds are so popular these days that many people are already investing in funds or are at least thinking about it. Below are some questions and answers:

What is Some of the History of Mutual Funds?

The very first mutual fund was formed in the Netherlands in the early 1800s. Back then, a mutual fund was known as an investment trust. The first mutual fund formed in the U.S. was the New York Stock Trust in 1889. Because at that time Boston was considered by many to be the financial center of our nation until the turn of the century, a majority of funds started there: Fidelity, Pioneer, and Putnum Fund, to name a few. In 1928 the Wellington Fund was established and was made up of both stocks and bonds.

Are IRAs the Same as Mutual Funds?

In 1975, a provision was added to the Internal Revenue Code that allowed individuals already in a corporate pension fund to contribute up to $2,000 per year to a Individual Retirement Account. This was by far and away the largest contributing factor contributing to the growth of mutual funds over the last 33 years.

What is a No Load Mutual Fund

This type of fund is offered by an open-ended investment company that imposes no sales charge (load) on its shareholders. Investors buy shares in no-load funds directly from the fund companies, rather than through a broker, as is done in load funds.

What Makes a Mutual Fund?

A mutual fund is simply a financial intermediary that allows a group of investors to pool their money together with a predetermined investment objective. The mutual fund will have a fund manager who is responsible for investing the pooled money into specific securities. When you invest in a mutual fund, you are buying shares of the mutual fund and thus you become a shareholder of the fund.

What Is An Index Fund?

Most investors are probably best off in the long run buying an Index Fund. This type of fund tracks one of the stock market indexes, whether it is the Standard & Poor’s 500 Stock Index, the entire stock market index, or some other performance measure of a like group of stocks.

What Is Net Asset Value?

For most of the funds, the NAV is determined daily, after the close of trading on some specified financial exchange, but some funds update their NAV multiple times during the trading day. Net Asset Value (NAV) is the value of a share in a mutual fund and is calculated by dividing the total value of the fund, less the fund’s liabilities, by the number of shares currently issued and outstanding.

Public Offering Price - What is It?

A Public Offering Price (POP) is nothing more than the net asset value plus a sales commission. Open-end funds sell shares at the POP and redeem shares at the NAV, and so process orders only after the NAV is determined. Closed-end funds may trade at a higher or lower price than their NAV; this is known as a premium or discount, respectively. If a fund is divided into multiple classes of shares, each class will typically have its own NAV, reflecting differences in fees and expenses paid by different classes.

What Are Some Herbal Remedies For Bad Breath?

May 8, 2008 on 7:02 am | In Home | No Comments
by Darren Wumoult

If you have a severe case of bad breath, it is possible that you have tried every single available solution and every brand of gum and mints available. You may have gotten results to some extent but the chronic nature of your condition means that mouth odor is still an issue. If you fall into this category, then it is possible that stepping up and using some herbal remedies for bad breath will provide the needed respite from this situation, instead of making use of treatments which do not focus on the underlying cause of your condition.

The beauty of these herbal treatments is that they do more than just address the symptoms of bad breath; they go further by tackling the root cause of your bad breath. What exactly are these herbal remedies and how exactly do they do the work that they do?

Herbal Bad Breath Remedies and their Ingredients

Listed below are some readily available ingredients which double as herbal remedies for bad breath.

One of the most common and the most efficient solutions people use as a remedy for bad breath problems is sweet fennel. This herb performs its work by settling the contents of the stomach and forestalling a build-up in stomach acid. A number of bad breath cases usually result from certain digestive disorders which include problems digesting food as well as constipation. Fennel resolves such problems rather easily and by so doing positively affects your breath situation.

Another common homeopathic remedy for bad breath is silica or silicon dioxide, which occurs naturally in the body and which helps to rid the body of toxins. This is one of the more popular herbal remedies because a buildup of toxins can mean chronic bad breath or halitosis caused by bacteria. Silica is usually found at the health food store or vitamin aisle of your local pharmacy.

Milk thistle also plays a role as an alternative herbal treatment for halitosis problems. It is a herb which serves as a restorative ingredient and helps the liver perform properly. Failure of the liver to perform optimally usually leads to toxin buildup which affects your breath adversely.

Other less popular solutions which help with halitosis issues are cranberries, green raw guava and citrus fruits like oranges. These remedies will assist with exterminating bacteria in your mouth. If you want breath which is long lasting and fresh, putting cloves in your mouth but not chewing them can help as well.

Stuff to Keep in Mind

There are some important things to remember when you’re considering herbal remedies for bad breath. One is that no remedy is going to work if you neglect your oral hygiene and health overall. The bad breath that happens because you forget to brush and are not flossing or rinsing is not going to be fixed with a remedy or pill. Another is that you need to drink plenty of water when using herbal remedies of any sort so they can be absorbed properly in your system.

The Biodiesel: Fuel of the Future

Biodiesel: The Fuel of the Future

Biodiesel is considered the fuel of the future because it is clean and helps lessen global warming. Biodiesel is produced from domestic, renewable resources like animal fats and vegetable oils. It can be used alone or blended with petroleum at any level.

Compression-ignition diesel engines can use this fuel with little or no modifications at all. Scientific evidence reveals that biodiesel reduces net carbon dioxide emissions by 78 percent compared to petroleum diesel. It is also cheaper in some countries than diesel.

Biodiesel manufacturing facilities make the fuel through a process called transesterification. In the transesterification process, the fat is purified. It then reacts with alcohol through catalysts such as potassium hydroxide or sodium hydroxide. They are then transformed into glycerol and esters.

Biodiesel is what remains after the process. Manufacturers can use the fats of animals and a number of plant oils to make the fuel. It can be derived from the plant oils of palm, sunflower, peanut, soybean or canola. Even recycled cooking grease can be made into biodiesel, though it is not the same as raw vegetable oil.

Most diesel-engine cars can use biodiesel. Car manufacturers have lists of car models that can run on pure biodiesel. The fuel also acts as a solvent or cleaner. It loosens deposits that could clog the engine. Because of this, it lubricates the engine, so it runs smoother. The engine actually lasts longer because the fuel leaves few or no deposits at all.

Biodiesel is a biodegradable and renewable fuel. It helps fight global warming because it has a closed carbon cycle. Biodiesel itself is made from carbon dioxide through photosynthesis. When the carbon dioxide from the fuel is released into the atmosphere, it is recycled by plants. The oils of the plants are then later processed again into fuel.

Even with its huge advantages over petroleum diesel, biodiesel does have a few drawbacks. It has a tendency to produce more nitrogen oxide emissions than diesel, which contributes to the formation of smog. Another disadvantage is its availability. More expansion and promotion is needed. Despite these problems and some others, biodiesel is still the fuel of choice for environmentalists and people who just want to help fight global warming. With the last two decades of the 20th century being the hottest in 400 years, we may see a lot more of biodiesel soon.

College Habit Forming For Future Credit Card Use

May 8, 2008 on 4:40 am | In Finance | No Comments
by Michael Benifez

College is likely the time when a person has their own credit card without direct supervision. This can be a dangerous thing. If a student doesn’t understand how fast credit card debt can rack up, they are in for a rude awakening. The credit card company doesn’t care who owns the card or their financial experience level. The credit limit on college student cards are lower, which helps to keep debt lower, at least. None of this debt has to do with student loans, though. When any credit card debt at all is mixed with student loans, it seems to magnify the effect. Paying back a student loan and credit card debt racked up while they were a student can be tough, to say the least.

Credit card debt is so common with students in college because of their inexperience with cards that there is a term simply called “college student credit card debt”. That is the main reason there is a lower credit limit on their cards. To avoid college student credit card debt, the student has to do essentially the same thing as anyone else trying to avoid debt.

First, you must know that a credit card is not free money. You will have to pay back anything that you charge. If you don’t pay it back when the bill comes in, you must pay it back later with a high interest rate attached, making it tougher to pay back. The credit card should not be viewed any differently than cash. In addition to this, spending habits in general should be conservative even with a 0% rate card. Don’t buy things just because they are on sale, etc. Only buy necessities.

To help avoid overspending, a monthly budget is a good idea. The student should create and stick to a budget. This will ensure that they will stay out of debt. Next, only one credit card is really needed, so a student shouldn’t get a second one. If the student gets multiple cards, they will have more money available to spend because the credit limit will be higher total. With a higher limit, the student is much more likely to spend more, not be able to pay it back, and get into debt. One credit card is plenty for a student.

A credit card for a college student should train them for how a credit card should be treated. It should help them to learn about how credit cards work. They should be instructed first, though. They need to learn about APR, annual fees, interest, and the pitfalls of not paying the bills in full and on time. Learning from a negative experience with debt is certainly not ideal.

Save Money And A Headache: How To Get Cheap Car Insurance

May 8, 2008 on 4:28 am | In Finance | No Comments
by Steve Johnson

Car insurance is a necessary expense. Often it is one of the most expensive bills we pay. Finding cheap car insurance both imperative and stressful. There are plenty of scams out there, so do your research.

Knowing how to find car insurance can decrease both your bill and your blood pressure. Take your time and read up on the process before you start. A little time now will make your decision in the future easier.

Make sure you get as many quotes as possible to start. Have all your car information, including bank financing, and the VIN number, as well as your driver’s license number in front of you.

Certain devices on your car can get you further discounts. Airbags, anti-lock breaks, security systems, and automatic seat-belts can all lower your rates. Be sure you know everything your car has available. In the long run, investing in anti-theft devices can pay for themselves in savings.

Once you have your lists and background research, you can start shopping for on-line quotes. The internet is a blessing for bargain shoppers. Instead of having to call each agency, you can get multiple quotes on-line for comparison. You can easily weed out the most expensive quotes and focus in on three or four.

Now that you have a list of quotes, it is time to make sure the companies supplying the quotes are reputable. In this area, too, the Internet has made this job easier. There are sites dedicated to scams, so type in the company name and see what comes up. If they are legitimate, you can add them to your pool of potential coverers. If not, toss them out.

Something to keep in mind when shopping for insurance is that if a deal seems too good to be true, that probably means it is. Never jump on the first offer you see because it seems too good to pass up. This is one of the first warning signs that the offer is a scam.

By now you should have several offers to compare. Set the offers up side by side and look for the one that offers the coverage that best suits you. Take your time and be sure to consider all the perks available from different companies. Some companies will offer discounts or additional services once you’ve been with them for a certain length of time.

Getting A Vacation Rental In Orlando

May 8, 2008 on 4:18 am | In Real Estate | No Comments
by Hispanic

There are several things you can choose when considering where to stay during your Orlando vacation: you can stay at a friend’s or relative’s place (provided you have one there), you can book in on a hotel (which is the normal route), or you can check in on one of those theme park hotels and resorts. There is, however, another option, one that will most likely be better especially if you’re traveling with your whole family. You can try vacation rentals.

Vacation rental involves you renting a whole house instead of a room for the duration of your stay in Orlando.

Also, if you have a larger family or a bigger group of people staying with you, it saves you the cost of booking extra rooms. You can get places with 3 rooms generally up to 7 rooms.

Do keep in mind that rentals don’t come with some of the same advantages as hotels such as room service and tour shuttles, but they offer you more privacy in a larger area. As with hotel bookings, make sure to book well in advance so that you can secure the rental of your choice in your ideal location, and at a lower price.

There are, of course, cons to this setup. For one, there’s no room service and shuttle transportations to the more famous Orlando tourist spots. If you managed to pick a house that is a bit far from the commercial sector, then you will not be able to buy some stuff you might suddenly need. For all intents and purposes, though, these are just minor drawbacks and should not discourage you from getting a vacation rental.

Vacation rentals are one of the ways to make your vacation in Orlando that much more personal. The problem of a lack of shuttle transportation (which is usually one of the perks of hotel bookings) is generally offset by the rental of a car. If you’re eyeing for a more private and home-y feel to your vacations, then vacation rental is definitely the way to go.

Effective Fertilization Of Your Vegetable Garden

May 8, 2008 on 4:17 am | In Gardening | No Comments
by Dave Truman

Fertilizer is an important part of a successful garden, but using the wrong one or using the right one the wrong way can cause problems. Overuse is one of the most common problems, especially in the case of slow-release fertilizers.

Slow release fertilizers are designed to release their nutrients over a period of time and if you apply them too often, you may wind up overlapping the new with the old that has not fully released yet.

Always make sure you read the directions for the fertilizers you’re using in your garden. In most cases, they will say how often they should be applied.

There are 3 components to fertilizer: nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. They’re rated by the amount of each of these ingredients. They will have a number, such as 20-20-20, which indicates how much of each is included. The first number is the nitrogen content, the second is the phosphorus and the third is the potassium.

Each of the three components of fertilizer promotes different types of growth. Nitrogen promotes leaf and stem growth, phosphorus helps with fruits and strong root systems and potassium helps to strengthen the plants.

Initially, a complete fertilizer will help to get your plants started properly. After growth has begun, be careful not to over-fertilize with nitrogen, which can make the plant put too much energy into growing leaves and stems, making the fruit growth suffer in turn.

There are many types of fertilizer available, some chemical based and others organic. Consider where you will be using them when choosing which type to use.

If you’re growing vegetables that you will be eating, you might want to think twice before using chemical fertilizers - after all, would you want to put that stuff in your body?

Tips For Protecting Yourself From Identity Theft

May 8, 2008 on 4:17 am | In Finance | No Comments
by Paul Wilcox

The false use of someone else’s credit card or bank account or even using someone else’s name to work under are all different forms of identity theft. You are often expected to repay money if you become a victim of identity theft but here are some tips that will guarantee some protection to help you from becoming victimized.

Firstly, we should all recognize the various forms of identity theft and how they occur in order to know how to prevent it from happening. There are many tips for protection against identity theft that we can easily follow such as checking our credit ratings regularly and keeping an eye on our bills for any unusual activity.

Never give out your personal information to anyone unless it is a verified and trusted source .A good habit to get into is to shred those personal documents that may have personal information from a credit card company or bank or even just a credit card offer that comes in the mail. Social security cards and numbers are extremely important to keep track of as it a great starting point for someone looking for a new identity.

You should always memorize your social security number. Never have it written on anything or printed on a check. The same goes for a driver’s license. Do not print anymore information on the checks then needed as it can easily be stolen. You may even want to consider having your information taken out of the phone book. Never give out any information from phone calls or emails that you haven’t asked for until you check to see if the person contacting you is genuine. Always keep copies of you personal papers or identification at home while traveling just in case they are lost or stolen.

Other tips for protection against identity theft are to keep any valuable information in the home locked away in a safe. If you receive unsolicited emails or telephone calls requesting your personal information, do not give any information away unless you contact your bank yourself to verify that the caller is legitimate. If traveling, keep copies of your identification at home in case they are stolen.

Online Identity Theft Tips

Tips for protection against online identity theft are relatively simple. Always keep the computer protected from viruses and hacking using high quality antivirus and spy ware programs which are updated regularly. Change passwords frequently and make them as hard to figure out as possible using combinations of letters and numbers.

Never answer emails requesting account information, passwords or credit card details. Before entering bank or credit card information, verify that the website is authentic and safe to use as it could easily be a fake.

Understanding Unsecured Debt Consolidation Loans

May 8, 2008 on 4:13 am | In Finance | No Comments
by William Blake

There are two types of debt that consumers can carry: secured debt and unsecured debt. Secured debt is debt that is collateralized by an asset, such as a home or an automobile. This is generally considered safer debt for creditors to extend, since there is an asset backing up the borrower’s ability to pay. Unsecured debt is debt that is not attached to any collateral.

The most common examples of this include credit card debt, student loans, and signature loans. If the borrower on one of these loans stops making payments, the creditor is out of luck, as there is no asset to seize. Interest rates on these types of loans are typically higher because of the addition risk to the lender.

The vast majority of debt consolidation loans are secured, as most end up being second mortgages on homes. However, some borrowers with debt problems do not own homes to use as collateral for loans. These individuals can still get debt consolidation loans, but the loans are not as easy to obtain. The reason for this is that bankruptcy can release people from the obligation to pay off unsecured debt.

If a debt consolidation loan is secured with an asset, the asset can still be seized in the case of a bankruptcy, meaning much less risk for the lender. There are several factors that make unsecured debt consolidation loans more difficult to obtain and use to accomplish financial goals.

First, the only borrowers that will qualify for an unsecured debt consolidation loan are people with good or excellent credit. Many borrowers who have enough debt that they are considering a debt consolidation loan have not done a good job of managing their debt problems in the past, so credit scores are generally lower for people with debt problems. Debt consolidation loans by nature are designed to help people who are in trouble with debt - most lenders aren’t interested in loaning more money to people struggling with debt if there is no asset to mitigate the risk of default.

Second, because lenders take on more risk with an unsecured debt consolidation loans, the loan amounts are generally much smaller, usually ranging from $5000 to $15,000. Again, most borrowers who need to consolidate their debts are in fairly serious trouble with debt, so a loan of $15,000 may not be enough to pay off their outstanding loans.

Finally, there are fewer lenders who are willing to extend a loan that is not secured for debt consolidation purposes. Because the market is smaller and the level of risk is higher than secured debt situations, interest rates are generally significantly higher and fees are usually higher as well. These loans are expensive to ensure that the only borrowers using unsecured debt consolidation loans are serious about getting out of debt.

Debt consolidation loans do help people get out of debt and are effective when used correctly, but borrowers will have a much easier time using them if they have assets to secure the debt.
