Lock bumping - is the threat of home invasion even greater now?

April 15, 2008 on 3:29 am | In Home Repair | No Comments
by John Carven

Lock bumping became big news at 2005’s Defcon when 11-year-old Jennalynn showed an exceptional talent for being able to bump almost any lock set in front of her. This year she again shows her talent by bumping the Medeco M3 high security lock, a lock that is supposedly un-bumpable!

Lock bumping, also known as “key bumping” and “bump keying” involves a technique in which an ordinary key can be modified with a file so that when it is inserted into a common door lock and tapped, the internal cylinder pins will bump up and the door lock can open. Most common household locks are vulnerable to this manner of picking.

In the 1970’s the process of lock bumping was started by Danish locksmiths so that they could open locks faster. The trick was exposed in 2005 when a news report by Nova was shown in Europe just how easy the method of using a bump key was.

The method of bumping a lock has spread all over the Internet and on many local news stations, showing everyone how easy it is to bypass certain types of locks. These videos and reports are causing great concern for everyone from stay-at-home moms to business owners. Homemade bump keys are a new threat to the security of conventional mechanical locks because they are so quick and easy to make.

The basic premise of lock bumping exploits a flaw with modern pin tumbler lock designs. It enough force is applied to the lower pins in a lock, some of it will get transferred to the upper pin deck which pushes the spring up and makes a small gap between the pins for a fraction of a second.

Key Bumping is a real thing but you’ll often hear people say that you just need to install a Medeco lock or one other specific type of Schlage lock in order to be protected. But as Jennalynn showed us, that’s not entirely true.

So what can you do to protect your home and family from being a victim of lock bumping? Easy options are installing the very best new locks you can afford. They might be hard enough to bump that they will scare away an amateur. Other options include installing motion sensitive outdoor lighting and a home security alarm. Professional thieves look for easy targets and if you do all of that, there is a good chance they will go elsewhere.

Planning a Successful Family Reunion

April 15, 2008 on 3:19 am | In Family | No Comments
by Ashley King

If you haven’t seen your extended family in many years and you’re longing to catch up on their lives, a family reunion is the perfect solution. Organizing a get-together with distant relatives can be a very special event, and you’ll have a lot of fun visiting and sharing memories.

Planning a family reunion is a lot of work, however. Tracking everyone down, finding a time that works for everybody, choosing a location, and planning the food and activities is a tremendous undertaking. If you have a large family, you’ll want to start laying your plans a year or two in advance.

The trickiest part will be finding a time when most of your relations can make it to the big event. People are busy with other plans, or can’t get away from their jobs. This can make or break your family reunion plans. Thankfully, today’s technology has brought us email, which makes it much easier to communicate quickly and agree on a date.

You will need to choose a good location for your family reunion. The size of your family will be a big factor in where you hold your get-together. If someone has a large backyard or a big spread out in the country and is willing to host the event, this can be ideal. Another alternative is to hold it in a park where you can reserve a section for your group.

Good Food for a Good Time

Next on your checklist should be the food. Eating is always an important part of any family get-together, and you need to look at what your choices are for feeding everyone.

Start by connecting with a representative of each family to gather their ideas and preferences, and then get general agreement on what you’ll be eating.

Almost certainly the simplest plan is to have your family reunion catered. Of course, this can get quite costly and might not be realistic for everyone’s personal finances.

A barbecue can be a fun and inexpensive way to feed the crowd. Ask each family group to bring their own grill to the park, and everyone can cook and eat together. And people can prepare the food that they enjoy the most. This is the ideal way to please everyone.

If you like, ask everyone to chip in some money to purchase snacks and drinks. Assign a side dish to each family and have a potluck.

Get Moving

After everyone has caught up with each other’s lives and eaten their fill, it’s time to get everyone moving. Having some fun activities planned is essential to a successful family reunion.

Your plans should include some sports and games that are fun for all ages, such as softball or volleyball. Another great idea is to hold a family Olympics with prizes and ribbons. Team up different age groups to keep it fair.

You also want some activities geared specifically to the children to keep them from getting bored and unruly. If you have lots of space, consider renting an inflatable play structure for the day. Set up a coloring area, and bring lots of outdoor games for them to play such as croquet, badminton, and horseshoes. Organize a sack race and candy toss.

With careful planning, your family reunion will supply enough memories to last a lifetime, or at least until the next gathering!

Installing Laminate on Your Counter Tops

April 15, 2008 on 3:08 am | In Home | No Comments
by Ken Morris

How to prepare the surface for the laminate

I recommend that you use laminate plastic sheets which are 1/16″ thick when used on horizontal work surfaces. If you are using it to cover vertical surfaces then you should use thicker plastic perhaps as thick as 1/32″ thick.

You should make sure that you clean the surface before you are ready to install the laminate. Remove anything which is on the surface such as paint or varnish. Clean the countertop using household cleaners to remove grease and grime. Most countertops which were purchased recently are made from high density particle board. Plywood bases are also suitable for using laminate plastic.

How to Cut the Laminate Plastic to Size

The plastic laminate material is actually fairly easy to cut, you can cut it with a utility knife, backsaw or even a circular saw depending on what you prefer. You should make sure you use a blade with fine teeth so that it doesn’t cause rough cuts. Before cutting you should use masking take to protect the surface from chips.

When you are using a circular saw then you should make a point of cutting from the back of the laminate to the front. These types of saws will cut on the upstroke, by cutting from the back you will prevent causing chips and damaging the surface. When using hand saws you should cut from the front side but at a small angle.

You should always cut the sheets slightly bigger than you need and then trim them with a utility knife when you install them. This reduces the chance of wasting material.

Fitting the laminate

The plastic laminate sheet can be applied using contact cement. You can also use epoxy adhesive however I would suggest using contact cements where possible.

You should roughen the surface by using rough sandpaper, and then clean away the dust using a brush or compressed air.

When laying the sheets you should be very careful to get it right first time. When using contact cement the bond will be strongest if you don’t move it around a lot. You should make sure that everything is accurately located before the glue is touched.

When you are installing the laminate sheets to vertical surfaces it’s normally fairly easy to stick the sheets without needing to use any wooden strips.

The Finishing Touches

When you have taken time to position the laminate correctly you should then remove the rods of dowel individually to stick the two pieces together.

Apply even pressure using a roller which will cause the laminate sheets to stick to the work surface. This will also remove any bubbles and ensure that the sheet is firmly fixed to your countertop. It’s worthwhile spending time on this because it will help your worktop last much longer.

If you don’t have a large enough piece of plastic laminate to cover the surface then you need to make a seam. This is fairly easy, you need to stick two pieces together, start by sticking the larger piece to the countertop and then add the other one.

To finish the edges you should use your router. First make sure that the blade is clean, also put tape on the base to protect your work surface.

Remove any extra adhesive using solvents, or simply nail polish remover if you wish.

Bad Debt Credit Is Here To Help You When You Need It

April 15, 2008 on 3:08 am | In Finance | No Comments
by David Smythe

If you have the bad luck to be a victim of money made of plastic or you have to deal with a serious credit card debt, you do not need to worry because it is not the end of the world. Your salvation is the fact that card companies can help you now.

But do not celebrate yet because if you avail of such a rescuer card it does not mean that you do not have trouble anymore. Do not think about a sudden disappear of all your debts thanks to your card company. In fact, debts are to be paid and will still exist till the last cent is paid.

There are two categories of bad debt credit cards: some of them are secured whereas others are there to consolidate your entire debt. If you opt for a secured credit card from your card supplier’s list, you will have to make a bank account and always maintain a balanced situation there. In this case you cannot spend money if it is actually missing.

Card companies usually set a credit limit in your account and you cannot spend more. Generally, the credit limit would be set from 50 to 100 percent of your bank balance. In short, a bad debt credit card allows you to enjoy using the plastic as payment for your transactions and purchases but there are limitations unlike the regular plastic. This is a chance that card suppliers give to those people who had a bad credit history to regain their bad credit rating in the past.

Moreover, a bad debt credit card has proved to be very efficient for those who cannot stop from buying all they want because they have now a kind of restriction which does not allow them to spend more than they actually own. Companies which offer this kind of credit cards are firstly thinking of methods that can keep you away from debts and, consequently, save your future helping you to maintain a balanced situation in your present account. Finally, you should not complain about this because you suffer from the consequences of your own actions from the past.

Consolidating all debts into one single card is another alternative for people. In this way, you will focus just on one bigger bill to be paid monthly instead of smaller but countless ones. In this way, your balance will be transferred to your rescuer card which has a high APR from your past bank cards.

This method offers you the chance to be free from the burden of having your debts accumulate and increase from the card with the high APR and concentrate on your job of paying off the debts on low interest.

Whatever way you choose to use your bad debt credit card, remember this is your “rescuer” from a bad credit rating. You are given another chance to still enjoy the benefits of using plastic money. You have to learn your lesson and make sure that the vicious cycle stops right there with your “rescuer” card. Learning to control your spending habits is the best lesson you have to learn.

Potty Training Basics for Yorkies

April 15, 2008 on 3:03 am | In Family | No Comments
by Michelle E. Arthur

Despite the fact that Yorkshire Terriers make small messes, when it comes to cleaning costs you will still pay the same thing to clean up urine stains whether your dog is small or large. Yorkshire Terriers have to be potty trained just as much as any other dog.

You have to remember that their size might work against them in that their tiny bladders won’t hold as much (or for as long) if you’re late coming home for their potty break.

Living in an apartment or home without a big yard is no problem for the Yorkshire Terrier. These pets only need a small space to do their business which means that a flowerbed can work wonders.

Some people make fun of little dogs in their knit sweaters, but it’s more than just a fashion statement. During the winter months in cold climates, the change from heated indoors to freezing outdoors is very harsh on a Yorkshire Terrier’s body.

The sudden chill can also distract them from the potty business and cause them to run back inside. Once warm again, the urge hits and there’s nowhere to go but the rug. You can make this easier on your Yorkshire Terrier by getting him a warm sweater for cold weather.

There are some dogs that refuse to go outdoors unless they see that you are holding a sweater for them. Some Yorkshire Terriers may even refuse going out in the rain without a sweater covering them up.

Other options include having a box ready lined with newspaper in the garage for a backup potty spot during inclement weather. Be careful to only use this spot during emergencies so that your pup will continue using his regular potty spot.

Be careful when you take your Yorkshire Terrier outdoors in your yard or at the park, watch where he walks. You want to keep your dog away from sniffing tall grass or bushes where your dog can easily become snake prey.

Be sure to be courteous of your neighbors even if your dog has only made a small mess outside. Regardless of the size it is still dog poop that needs to be picked up promptly.

Not to mention that dog poop on their shoes may not be visible until it’s tracked onto the carpet. That won’t win you an invitation to the neighbor’s next bar-b-q. It’s your responsibility to clean up after your dog. Don’t try to get out of it by arguing that it’s so small it doesn’t matter. It matters to anyone who doesn’t own it.

Housetraining works just the same for large dogs as it does for small ones like Yorkies. You can start with crate training and work to establish a routine for potty breaks. Many little dogs are spoiled because they constantly sit in their owner’s lap. This is where your positive reinforcement, praise and affection can come in handy.

Do you even know how to relax?

April 15, 2008 on 3:01 am | In Family | No Comments

Physical symptoms of stress include: fatigue (51%); headache (44%); upset stomach (34%); muscle tension (30%); change in appetite (23%), teeth grinding (17%); change in sex drive (15%); and feeling dizzy (13%). Psychological symptoms of stress include: experiencing irritability or anger (50%); feeling nervous (45%); lack of energy (45%); and feeling as though you could cry (35%). Physical stress, emotional stress, and nutritional stress all exhibit symptoms of stress in different parts of the body and mind. The question isn’t all the symptoms of stress that society keeps chasing. Physical reactions you experience when you’re stressed are no accident. The human body developed these defense mechanisms to deal with the threat of predators and aggressors.

Physical stressors are actions that directly remove or alter habitat. Examples include tilling soil, filling wetlands, or dredging a channel or harbor. Physical stressors are pain and exhaustion. Mental stressors delay and confusion.

Feeling we’ve run out of options, we tend to defer stress with the mind by talking ourselves into believing that’s just the way life is. Deferring stress is the same as resigning to stress or believing it’s a force we can’t change. Feeling better physically counters the effects of stress. Dr Vishwas ended by saying that ?Stress is not in our environment, it is what we perceive in our mind and attitude? so it is best to tackle stress with Yoga.

Stress is a normal part of life. Many events that happen to you and around you — and many things that you do yourself — put stress on your body. Stress is dissipated when you do something that stimulates the mind or the body in an activity that is completely separate from work. By taking your mind off of work, you will be able to relax, your body will be less tense, and come the next workday, you will find yourself renewed, rested and ready once more to face the daily challenges of our profession. Stress is a reaction to physical, mental or emotional conditions, changes and demands in our lives.

Stress is a major contributing factor either directly or indirectly, to coronary artery disease, cancer, respiratory disorders, accidental injuries, cirrhosis of the liver and suicide; the six leading causes of death in the United States. Stress aggravates other conditions such as multiple sclerosis, diabetes, herpes, mental illness, alcoholism, drug abuse, and family discord and violence. Stress is usually grown in Mexico or Columbia by drug lords running large smuggling operations and care little about the quality of their weed. Most kids living in middle-class suburbia will never see stress in their lifetime. Stress is real, and it is just as medical as other medical problems.

Stress is a normal human reaction to events that we perceive as challenges or threats. Stress can be either positive or negative. Stress is a term that is hard to define because it means different things to different people. Stress is a normal occurrence in life for people of all ages. Stress is a normal part of any life, and any job. Stress can be positive or negative, and how people react to various stressors is highly individual.

Stress is therefore a response to pressure. To some degree pressure can be beneficial, when it inspires motivation and commitment, but excessive pressure becomes stress which is harmful and can lead to major illness, even death. Stress is definitely still a factor in lower grades, and it can have major effects on student motivation. On one hand, too much stress can completely paralyze and overwhelm students, resulting in feelings of frustration and depression, but a healthy amount of stress can also motivate students to work diligently and keep up with assignments. Stress is related to telomere health which influences cell replication.

Stress can either help you readjust your life or hinder you. It all depends on how your react to it. Stress has many effects on our health. If not given proper attention could lead to hypertension, stroke, ulcers, migraine headaches, coronary heart disease, tension headaches, asthma, hay fever to name a few. Stressors that are perceived to be changeable are more likely to elicit problem-solving strategies while stressors perceived to be unchangeable are more likely to elicit social support seeking and emotion-focused strategies.
