Five Simple Ways to Get Out of Debt
April 8, 2008 on 4:54 am | In Finance | No CommentsHaving too much debt can be an overwhelming problem. It can constantly loom over you, casting a shadow over everything else you’re doing. Unfortunately, getting into debt is all to easy, and the result is more and more people are having trouble making ends meet.
When you’re faced with debt, it can seem impossible to get control of it. But if you recognize the problem early enough, it can be fairly simple. If you’re struggling with your debts, here are five ways to get rid of them and get your finances back on track.
1. Pay more than the minimum payments. Ideally, we should pay off our credit card balances every month, but sometimes we don’t or can’t. Paying more than just the minimum payment will allow us to pay off our debts much faster. It also has the potential to save us a lot of money, because the quicker we pay credit cards off, the less interest accrues.
This tip is true for other types of loans and credit as well - car loans, mortgages, etc. In some cases, particularly mortgages, you may be faced with a prepayment penalty, but if there is no penalty for paying your debt off early, you should do so.
2. Cut down your expenses and put what you save toward paying off your debt. If you look at your spending over a month, you’ll most likely find some things that you don’t really need. Every dollar you save and put towards your debt gets you close to being debt-free.
3. Sell things you have around the house that you don’t need or use. Have you got a second car that you don’t use very often? Maybe a second computer that isn’t really getting much use? Even just gathering up things that you don’t need any longer and having a yard sale can help you raise some money for paying down your debt.
4. Find ways to make extra money. You could take on a second job, do some babysitting, or sign up with a direct sales company. If you put all of your extra money toward paying off your debts, you shouldn’t need to do this for very long.
5. Consolidate your debts, but make sure you understand the consequences. One of the ways you can do this is to transfer all your outstanding credit cards onto a single low-interest card. This usually lowers your monthly minimum payment so if you keep making the same payments you have been, the balance will be paid off sooner. Stay away from home equity loans or other secured loans if you can since that will put your property at risk.
Getting out of debt isn’t as hard as most people think. With a few adjustments to your lifestyle and a little bit of willpower, you’ll be able to get on top of it.
Is Bankruptcy Really the Answer?
April 8, 2008 on 4:51 am | In Finance | No CommentsFor those who feel that they are in serious financial distress, bankruptcy may have crossed their minds. Bankruptcy is not something to be taken lightly. While your debt may be wiped clean, there are far-reaching consequences for that “new freedom”.
When a person’s debt has risen to a level that they can’t hope to get under control, they may consider filing for bankruptcy. For a consumer there are two bankruptcy choices: Chapter 7 and Chapter 13. Chapter 7 bankruptcies involve wiping out the debts in part or in their entirety and liquidating assets to do it. Chapter 13 bankruptcies are more of a debt restructuring plan that gives you more time and a plan to pay back a portion of the debt that is owed to creditors.
Your credit will be damaged if you file for bankruptcy, maybe for as much as ten years. If you apply for any credit during that time the creditor will be informed of the bankruptcy.
Previously, people have taken advantage of bankruptcy laws. They were allowed to file more than once for Chapter 7 so many used it to wipe out all their debt.
Individual states decided on what if any assets will be excused from seizure for a bankruptcy. In knowing that, people used any available cash to purchase things like cars and homes to avoid payment while still keeping their personal items. If this happens, very often the creditors would get very little back from the settlement.
The new laws concerning bankruptcy have changed this. Whereas courts used to have the leeway of deciding who could file for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, there are now criteria that must be met first. In order to file for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, a person has to have an income that is below the median income for the state where they live. Their income must be put through a calculation that determines if they have enough disposable income to pay twenty-five percent of their outstanding debt.
More people will have to file for bankruptcy under Chapter 13. The courts will decide the amount of repayment from facts that they receive. An allowance is made for rent or mortgage, food and other relevant bills. With the new laws, the IRS regulates the value of each bill, exempts a certain amount, and payments are decided from the rest.
Lawyers are charging more than ever because declaring bankruptcy has become much more involved. The whole process will cost the client much more than before which will hopefully make them think twice about filing. Credit counseling is also required as a first step before filing bankruptcy. The counselor may be able to help you and rule out the need to file.
Filing for bankruptcy is a major issue and should not be taken lightly. Although it clears your debt, it does come with its own price tag.
How to Use Homeschool Lesson Plans Effectively
April 8, 2008 on 4:29 am | In Family | No CommentsHomeschooling your child using theme-based learning is a fun way to teach and learn. You can involve your child as you brainstorm a them from virtually any topic your child shows an interest in.
Young children might prefer themes around things like apples, the zoo, birds, stars, or a favorite author. Whenever you tailor your homeschool lesson plans around a theme, learning becomes a lot more fun and creative.
When you’re basing homeschool lesson plans around a theme unit, one of the other things you’ll need to decide is how much time you’ll need to cover that particular theme.
You could spend anywhere from a week to a month on the theme, depending on how much your child wants to learn the content. I suggest spending only two weeks at most on one theme.
It’s not difficult to integrate themes into homeschool lesson plans. You’ll also come to realize just how much fun you and your child are having by learning so much through a particular theme.
It’s not necessary to make every single lesson part of a thematic unit. You don’t really even need to do theme-based teaching throughout all your homeschool lesson plans.
One important idea to consider is involving your child in the planning process. Let your child choose some of the themes to focus on.
By giving your child choices, you help build his or her interest in what you’re teaching. I believe it’s essential to involve your child as much as you can in all aspects of lesson preparation and planning.
Let’s go over an example as to how you would build on themes in your homeschooling lesson plans. Take, for example, using apples for your thematic unit. You could have a lesson on how apples grow as part of a science lesson.
You could slice up an apple into sections to do fractions. You could make Johnny Appleseed the focus for a lesson in Social Studies. You could read books about apples or have your child write a paragraph about apples for Language Arts.
But there’s more: We could turn those apple slices we used in the math lesson to create apple stamps for our art lesson. We could sing songs about apples. We could finish off with a cooking lesson and make apple bread or apple sauce.
Integrating your child’s interests is one of the most important things to remember when using theme-based homeschool lesson plans. It makes learning even more fun and interesting when you tailor the curriculum you’ve already planned into thematic units.
Keeping Bad Bugs Out Of Your Garden
April 8, 2008 on 4:27 am | In Gardening | No CommentsAll your hard work can be completely ruined in a few hours by the nasty pests that appear as soon as you’ve finished planting your garden. That’s something no gardener needs or likes to see.
Stopping these bugs from attacking your garden by keeping them out right from the start is the very best option. I’m sure you know there are numerous chemicals that will do this, but you must put your and your family’s safety first.
At the same time, by killing the unwanted pests you also kill the friendly ones. You don’t want to do that because you need all the help you can get in the fight against the bad bugs.
The bugs that can be your best defense against the pests that want to damage your crops need to be allowed in, not killed off with the rest by indiscriminate spraying of chemicals. These gardeners friends, such as spiders and ladybugs, will help you by repelling or eating the bad guys.
You should find out from your local nursery what plants attract these helpful insects so that you can plant them to encourage the good pests to take up residence and keep the damaging ones out.
There are some plants with a scent that repels the bad bugs and others that they just don’t like. If you want a healthy harvest of tomatoes, you can plant the herb borage among them or even marigolds, these will stop the pests from damaging your fruit.
Don’t neglect your housework in your garden - keep it clean and tidy. The bad pests absolutely love dark damp places, so try to keep these to a minimum. Get rid of any rubbish such as dead leaves, grass clippings and weeds by doing a regular clean up, this will help to deter them from taking up residence.
There are also some home remedies that will repel these damaging pests such as a hot pepper wax spray. The harmful insects and even some native pests will be put off by the spicy oil residue this leaves on your plants.
As long as you give your harvest a good wash you can forget about any after taste. This will remove any traces of the spray before you eat your crops, so don’t worry.
There’s nothing worse than seeing all your hard work amount to nothing at any time and it’s no different for gardeners. Don’t allow all your time and effort to go to waste by not doing anything to get rid of these insect pests.
Do a little homework first around your local area and find out what are the best companion plants to keep the good guys around and what will annoy the bad pests, this will pay dividends.

Homeschool History - What Is Homeschool?
April 8, 2008 on 4:07 am | In Family | No CommentsHome education, or homeschooling, is the teaching method instituted in the family home instead of a public, private or charter school. Initially, before there was any kind of public education, all schooling was done in the home.
Occasionally there were also small community centers for learning. Homeschool history is varied and rich, since it was the first tool of instruction.
If a child had an education to speak of, or was instructed by private tutors, he or she was seen as being advantaged. These children usually had important or wealthy families.
Way back when, being taught at home in an informal setting was the only way to get an education. Parents were usually the educators, but sometimes local teachers would help.
It is widely known that before we had public education, the United States experienced its peak literacy rate. It’s important to remember this point in homeschool history.
During the 1800s, there were many important changes to the way education and schooling was carried out. One of the main changes was the introduction of mandatory school attendance laws. According to the government, it is a human right that children receive a public education.
Since that time there has been plenty of debate about the success of public schooling. Many people have gone so far as to say that the current education system is harming younger children, especially boys since they mature at a slower rate.
There have even been studies conducted to observe the effects the education system has on children between eight and twelve years of age.
The findings of this research showed that formal schooling was both mentally and physically damaging to children. At times, the negative environment produced behavior problems.
According to the tests conducted in the 1970s for these studies, illiterate tribal mothers did a better job raising their children to be more socially and emotionally advanced than people educating children in the West.
It is thought that this advancement was due to the bond that was created between parents and their children. This bond is obviously decreased with formal education.
Parents bank on homeschool history when they pick and choose from a variety of curricula and teaching methods for educating their children. Schooling is done in a secure environment, but children are usually still mandated to pass required tests.
Most parents who decide to homeschool their children do it because they want their children to have the best education possible.
Different Styles of Espresso Coffee Machines
April 8, 2008 on 3:52 am | In Home Accessories | No CommentsSome people will say that coffee is the essence of life. I can attest to that as I need at minimum, two cups of coffee in the morning before I can even function.
Xanthine alkaloid, otherwise known as caffeine, is found not only in coffee beans, but also in tea leaves, and acts as a stimulant. Coffee is amongst the most popular drinks across the globe, and is consumed by adults in many countries in an attempt to increase bodily and mental alertness.
Home coffee makers and espresso makers. Coffee makers are generally one of two types, coffee brewers or espresso machines. Espresso machines are favorites of true coffee lovers because they instantly produce fresh, strong coffee.
An espresso machine can come in lots of different sizes: you can buy a small one for your home, or watch a barista use a larger machine in a coffee shop. These machines all do basically the same thing: they shoot streams of hot water through concentrated ground coffee, and the end result is a tiny shot of frothy espresso.
Besides drinking straight espresso, you can mix it with frothed milk, cream, or water to make other drinks Many professionals prefer espresso machines because the flavor and intensity of the coffee remains intact. Other coffee makers that brew the coffee produce a more diluted drink than espresso, but it preferred by people that do not want to mix drinks, don’t want a drink as strong as espresso, or are looking for a simple, hot drink.
Different Espresso Types - Each of the various different types of espresso machines will make an espresso of differing intensity and flavor. Over the years, though, espresso has become the base ingredient of high-quality coffee.
Lots of different kinds of coffee flavored drinks have been developed, and many of them have enjoyed great popularity in recent years. One of them is the Caf Latte, which pairs espresso with milk. A cappuccino does the same thing, but tops it off with froth; a cortado is just a plain shot of frothy espresso.
Mocha a cafe latte with chocolate syrup added. The same technique as the mocha can be used to a turn a cafe latte into different drinks by adding vanilla, amaretto, caramel, or other flavorings and syrups.
Espresso is a popular beverage that is enjoyed all year round. With new flavors and techniques being introduced all the time, you will have fun seeking out your favorite blend.
The Best Types of Patio Barbecues
April 8, 2008 on 3:31 am | In Gardening | No CommentsWhen it comes to which kind of patio barbecues you want for your garden there are two basic styles that one can choose from. You can either choose to buy one that uses gas or else you can go the more traditional route and buy one that uses charcoal. But what you will soon discover when looking at each type is that they have their own particular advantages and disadvantages and the one you choose will be because it is the one that you prefer.
Of the two types of barbecues, that one now can have installed on the patio at home the gas version is becoming ever more popular over the charcoal ones. Below we now look at just what some of the advantages and disadvantages are from owning either version that we mentioned above.
1. The gas version is becoming increasingly popular simply as they are far easier to operate and a lot less messy compared to the charcoal ones. But the coals that you need to use (lava rock or ceramic briquettes) can prove an expensive purchase initially but they do last for a considerably long time unlike charcoal.
2. You will find that the initial purchase of a charcoal barbecue is much less than that of a gas one. The only other real expenditure you have when purchasing a charcoal one is buying the starting fluid and the bricks for it. Whereas with a gas one you also need to buy the coals for it along with a full cylinder of gas as well.
3. A big disadvantage that comes with owning a charcoal barbecue compared to the gas barbecues is the time it actually takes before you are able to start cooking on one. With a charcoal patio barbecue, you need to light the charcoals and then wait for the flames to disappear before the coals are hot enough to cook with. This can take as much as 15 to 30 minutes before the coals have gained sufficient heat in them. Whereas with a gas barbecue you just make sure that, the gas is lit and then wait for a few minutes for the coals to heat up enough.
4. Another big advantage to be gained from owning a gas barbecue is that there are several different additional pieces of equipment that you can get for it. You will often find that most good quality gas patio barbecues come with a side burner already attached alongside the actual grill. With this, you can prepare sauces or other kinds of side dishes that are to be served with your main meal. Also, if you want to spend a little more money you can get smokers, rotisseries and pan roasters to go with your gas barbecue as well.
5. When it comes to the taste of the food that these types of barbecues provide there is no real difference whatsoever. The ceramic briquettes or lava rock, which you use in a gas one, provides the same heat as that which the charcoal in a more traditional style barbecue produces.
As you will see from above it does not really matter which of the various types of patio barbecues it is you choose to buy. But it is a good idea that you do make sure that the one you do select is made using only good quality steel. Plus look for ones that offer you a warranty of around 10 years on them as well.
Installing Siding Requires Planning, Budget
April 8, 2008 on 3:10 am | In Home | No CommentsThere are a number of benefits to be realized from upgrading the home with vinyl siding, just as there are a few slightly negative results from installing siding. Because the pros outweigh the cons, vinyl siding has long been a popular choice among those who wish to put a new “face” on their home.
Vinyl siding is long lasting and very durable, a benefit that can be experienced without making a major dent in the bank account. Add to this the fact that vinyl siding is almost maintenance free and it would seem vinyl siding is the perfect way to renovate a home.
Perhaps it would be best to look at some of the specific benefits that homeowners get with the installation of this type of siding. Vinyl siding is available in a variety of colors and thickness. Even the surface (grain) can vary. This wide range of choices makes vinyl siding a practical and desirable choice for many homeowners.
Many homeowners choose vinyl siding for one major reason: It is extremely durable. Because they won’t have to spend additional funds on covering the outside of the home in the near future, homeowners can justify the expense of putting vinyl siding on when it is needed. Vinyl siding is made to withstand most weather conditions without significant damage. In fact, the newer products in this line are even stronger and longer lasting than siding made just a few years ago. In addition, the colors of new vinyl siding will last without fading, even in constant sunlight.
Some would say that maintenance is a key reason to choose vinyl siding. To be more exact, homeowners choose vinyl siding because they don’t have to spend a lot of time maintaining the siding. Painting is not necessary. About the only maintenance required is a spray/wash a couple of times during the year. (This alone can maintain a new look on the siding.) Some homeowners have had to put fresh caulking on a few joints, such as between the siding and trim, but even that is not a regular task.
Most homeowners have found vinyl siding to be extremely cost effective, precisely because it doesn’t have to be replaced for years. It isn’t necessary to buy paint or pay someone to do the painting. While the initial cost can be a bit higher than a quick paint job, the long-term cost will be considerably easier to bear. Homeowners can choose from various finishes and thicknesses for their siding, depending on budget. (Siding may also reduce energy costs as an extra layer of insulation.)
It may seem that cost considerations, lack of maintenance and durability would be enough to convince homeowners to choose vinyl siding. However, there is more to this story. Vinyl siding also adds considerably to the overall appearance of the home because of the “grains” and the bright, long-lasting colors. Newer designs of vinyl siding have the color baked into the material rather than applied to the surface. The color lasts much longer and small scratches are less noticeable.
However, vinyl siding is not perfect, by any definition. It is not indestructible or completely maintenance free. Severe weather of a particular kind (such as strong winds that blow debris, or large hail stones) can damage siding more than it might damage wood. Sometimes moisture can be trapped under vinyl siding, though careful installation can limit this.
The wise homeowner will do a bit of research about vinyl siding first. This, and a bit of careful shopping, can make vinyl siding the correct choice for renovating the home.
